Waban

Waban is one of the 13 pleasant village in Newton, Massachusetts. The buildings in this area have a unique historical character that tells a story of the early development period on this land. The History of Waban

The village called Waban developed gradually over a period of several hundred years. One of the first settling families obtained a 30-acre land parcel in 1681, and their descendants are still continuing the original colonial legacy of their ancestors through maintenance of the original house on Fairlee Road. This home is designated as a protected building under the city's Newton Landmark Preservation Site program. The Woodward family is proud of this history, and their name is well-established on various road signs, train stations and other notable locations.

The urban development of Waban did not accelerate in any significant degree until the middle of the 1880s. The Boston and Albany Railroad was new to the area, and commercial activities were soon to follow. Real estate developments and housing lots began to stimulate various kinds of related economic activity in the area. Churches, libraries and museums with various types of architectural imprints started to appear in rapid succession. Today, many of these buildings still remain intact, and they can be viewed by foot on the popular walking tours made famous throughout the various Newton villages.
